Lone Star Love will continue its ho-down at the John Houseman Theatre four weeks longer than previously expected. The musical is now set to end its limited engagement on February 6.
Lone Star Love, a musical adaptation of William Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor, relocates Shakespeare's comedy to Texas. In the musical, Falstaff is still up to his shenanigans, but this time they happen on the Texas prairie. Jack Herrick of the string band The Red Clay Ramblers wrote the score for the show. Michael Bogdanov, Bland Simpson and Tommy Thompson also contributed to the music.
Starring Jay O. Sanders as Falstaff, the cast features Stacia Fernandez, Beth Leavel, Gary Sandy, Dan Sharkey, Clarke Thorell and the Red Clay Rambers Clay Buckner, Chris Frank and Herrick. Also included in the cast are Kevin Bernard, Shane Braddock, Peter Connelly, Harriett Foy, Stacey Harris, Drew McVety, April Nixon, Nick Sullivan, Julie Tolivar, Brandon Williams and Dana Zihlman.
Lone Star Love, directed by Michael Bogdanov and choreographed by Randy Skinner, opened off-Broadway on December 8 to mixed reviews. In his Broadway.com Review of the tuner, Edward Karam wrote: "Thankfully, a winning cast under Michael Bogdanov's direction is committed to providing a walloping good time… The show is crowded with throwdowns, hoedowns and showdowns, exuberantly choreographed by Randy Skinner, although fight director Malcolm Ranson contributes a great brawl. The lilting score includes an amusing anthem to cattlemen and a charming ballad addressed to the prairie moon. On occasion the lyrics falter, but at his best Herrick does nifty work."
